Why does it take an incident, an accident or an emergency to get our attention? It did me. A visit to the ER, 5 stitches and one heck of a headache. I had passed out and found the floor the hard way. We are all running so fast to keep up the increasing demands on our time, our energy and our mental and physical health, that it takes a lot to grab out attention and slow us down.
I believe the pace of information, technology and our new millennial culture is continuing the 24 x 7 pace so popular in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. The years of the internet boom (and bust), the exponential growth of technology, the globalization of information in an instance and the increasing need to “keep” up the charade. Yes, I said charade.
The charade was, and is, our belief that MORE is better, FASTER is better and… and… Well, I have something to share….. Simplicity and self-compassion are making a comeback. Yep… and their time has come. (Breathing a sigh of relief) and none too soon.
I know I reached that conclusion recently. After a year of extensive travel, speaking and coaching, to gain credibility (and some notoriety) so I could stand out in the crowd of the “coaching field”, I found myself better known, yet not feeling truly fulfilled. Making the decision that MORE and FASTER were not better – I began to demystify the illusion, unclutter the “have to” dos queued in my email, slowed down the pace, and simplified my message. Many of my coaching and consulting colleagues are beginning to change their pace and tone too!
In my work with professionals, business owners and even stay at home moms seeking more meaning in their work and life, coaching on how to increase their income, influence and impact may seem like an oxymoron. And while it is not quite a 180 degree turn around it is about looking through a different lens. It is about NOT perpetuating the MORE and FASTER = BETTER paradigm that is so popular with many. It is about looking more deeply into what has meaning to each of us, into discovering our WHY (some call this purpose), and putting together a CLEAR and SIMPLE plan (or you can use the businessy word – STRATEGY) to do just that.
And here is a quick tip, to help you slow that pace when you find yourself rushing through your day yet not feeling like you are making any headway.
Simplicity Tip #1 – Stop comparing yourself to others. It is in our rush to keep up with others, do what they did that worked so well for them, or to try all the things that others have found successful that you will find yourself spinning, rushing, pushing…
It is OK and acceptable to slow it down. You are enough without “NEEDING” to do another thing, try another strategy, or DO … Stop, take a breath (or several ;’)) and know you are enough.
