Are you familiar with that feeling of being stuck? I know I have often found myself there!

That felling comes when you want to make a change in one or more areas of your life, but can’t seem to do it and you don’t know why. It can be stressful not knowing which way to turn or what to do next.  The good thing is there are only two reasons for your “stuckness” and you can overcome both of them.

Many people who look for a coach indicate they are looking for some other form of guidance. They cite “confusion” as the thing that keeps them stuck.  They come looking for clarity. With good coaching, they do usually gain clarity about what’s blocking them and learn what to do to change it. However, most don’t really take the action to get unstuck. They only make the changes they need to make. Until they release the resistance they stay in a state of confusion.

What is resistance? It is the term used to describe a state of non-acceptance about someone or something in your life.  When it comes to being stuck, the “someone” is some aspect of yourself and the “something” is a shift in perception that would open you up to change.  You can tell when you are in resistance because there is a story attached.   The story is a little game the mind plays with you so that you remain “safe.” That story is a rationalization to support staying stuck and avoiding change.

Change is scary – no doubt about that.   Any time you come close to stepping out of your comfort zone to make any kind of a change, the primitive parts of our brain will work to keep us from making that change. Our primitive brain has good intentions here. It’s trying to protect us. But in the end, it works against our efforts to become better.

The solution is to know your mind and understand that it does these things and then to avoid playing its game.

The story of “confusion” is a favorite little game that the mind loves to play, and it usually goes something like this:

“I am so confused about what to do next.  I don’t know what to do.  I wish someone would tell me what to do.”

How to avoid the mind’s story-telling games and release resistance

  1. We have all heard the thoughts we focus on become “stronger.” Don’t be afraid to surrender to them. Be willing to let the mind chatter on about how stuck and confused you feel.  This is the first step, to surrender.  Accept the mind’s input without giving it power over you and your decisions.
  2. The truth is you know the next step when you listen to your intuition or “gut.”  You may not want to accept it, because it that mean you need to do something you don’t want to do, or perhaps that someone won’t want you to do it.It might also mean that you take no action at all. It may be you need to change your mindset or those thoughts and beliefs that are keeping you stuck. That is often the more difficult of the two – it is often easier to “DO SOMETHING” outside yourself than to change your mindset.Whether it is your “gut” or your “intuition” telling you to change something or to change a thought or belief, the bottom line is this: If you feel stuck you aren’t listening to it.
